Dear Friends and Fans,
My retail store is now closed.
In our last weeks together, our small yet mighty team worked harder than ever to keep “Delighting our clients by treating them, our ingredients and our world with love and respect.” There were days we didn’t think we could do it, but somehow found the gumption to keep on keepin’ on (thanks to so many of you!), completed our orders, kept our retail shelves stocked, and lived to tell the tale.
With continued support (and some crazy huge “stocking up” orders!) from our friends and fans, family and community, clients, landlady and even the bank (yes, the bank!), we were able to continue supporting our local farmers and artisanal producers right up until the end of January, and made almost enough money to pay our suppliers and remaining staff member (the lovely, über talented, and always cheerful no-matter-how-tough-things-got Becca). Thank you all!
I didn’t think I had any more tears left in me, but as they quietly roll down my cheeks, I find myself already missing the shop, seeing our regular clients, miss having a job to go to, and even though I thought I wouldn’t so soon, actually miss making food.
I miss hearing what a wonderful place 718 Queen Street East was, and hope whomever rents it next feels the amazing energy we felt when we were there. For all the challenges, I have never spent as much time laughing as I did while at the shop with my incredible staff/friends.
I look forward to one last “thank you and goodbye” this Saturday, February 9th at the Evergreen Brick Works Farmers’ Market. I will truly miss seeing you all (shoppers, vendors, EBW volunteers and staff) at the market throughout the rest of the winter season.
For the next while, I expect I will try make sense of why LPK’s wasn’t financially successful as I truly believed it would be, why it seemed so difficult to sell food that was made with the best ingredients and intentions, for so many to enjoy regardless of dietary requirements (vegan, gluten-free, otherwise, or none at all) – all with sustainability in mind. Why, in what feels like an epidemic, so many others who also believe in local, organic, fair trade and sustainability are literally struggling, and fighting for the survival of their businesses (yet are still offering to lend me a helping hand in my time of mourning and transition).
What will come after that, I don’t know, but the Universe will provide. I have 14 years’ worth of boxes to unpack and sort through first. However, I know I will remain connected to food and sustainability. I know I will continue championing a lifestyle based on awareness of who and where our food comes from, eating organic, supporting local and fair trade, and above all, believing that every single one of us can make a difference in this world by actively choosing to do and be better, each and every single day.
To quote my friend and someone who inspires many, Lisa Borden “…The sin of unknowing affects us all, and one of the best ways that we can repair the world, and take care of each other is to continue to educate and inspire…and if we listen to each other, and act on what we know, and share it widely and kindly, imagine what a better life we can lead now, plus how it might benefit our future generations.”
Please, think about who and where your food comes from, and then choose wisely. It’s up to all of us to make the difference…!
